In today’s Episode…

We’re going over some of the basics!  When asked by a listener how to prepare, we realized that this is a great question. Listen in to hear all of our tips for getting mentally and physically ready for that first shift.

Stuff we Mentioned:

Bar Schools: How to decide whether it’s worth it, and how to know whether a bar school is worth attending.

Books: Reading up can be a huge help! Chris recommended reading the following books to get started:

Physical Skills: Make no mistake, bartending is a physical job and practice makes you fast! Practice your shake, stir, and strain until it becomes second nature. (Listen in for a few more tips!)
Cocktail Recipes: Last but certainly not least, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with some of the more common cocktail recipes. Here are the ones Chris recommends learning:

  • Margarita
  • Old Fashioned
  • Manhattan
  • Martini and dirty martini
  • Cosmo (yep people are still drinking this)
  • Bloody Mary
  • Whiskey Sour
  • Negroni
  • Mojito
  • Daquiri/ Lemon Drop/etc
  • Moscow Mule/ Dark and stormy, etc
A bit of advance preparation can help a lot – but most of all, just be willing to work hard and learn and you will do just fine.
